A five-factor Cotswold Outdoor study reveals the best European destinations for an outdoors honeymoon.
Honeymoons are typically known for their laidback nature, however, in recent years there’s been a spike in couples seeking out more action-filled getaways.
We know that no honeymoon is a one-size-fits-all, just as no couple is the same as the next. As such, our latest study caters to different levels and styles of adventure, ranging from serene stargazing to adrenaline-fueled outdoor activities.
To find the ideal outdoor honeymoon destinations, we’ve analysed everything from access to areas of natural beauty, the number of highly-rated campsites, the number of hiking and outdoor activities, and even stargazing opportunities for that extra honeymoon sparkle.
Taking into account all five factors, Norway has been crowned overall best outdoors honeymoon destination. Known for its stunning landscapes and natural beauty, it’s no wonder Norway is highest-ranking with the lowest light pollution, which allows for breathtaking views of the night sky. In fact, Norway is the only one that has made it onto the top 10 stargazing list… so be sure to book your honeymoon in winter for the best chances to see the northern lights!
Runner-up Germany has done really well in the hiking trail category with its number of trails topping the list at an astounding 36,773. The country’s trails accommodate individuals with different needs – 117 of these being wheelchair-friendly with helpful accessibility guidance. So nothing should stop you from enjoying some crisp air and sunny mornings with your loved one.
France finished within the top three and scored particularly well for the most number of four-star campsites (1,792). Ranking as Europe’s fourth and fifth top outdoor destinations are Spain and Croatia respectively.
If you and your significant other are fans of camping, but also seek to be comfortable and enjoy amenities outside of traditional camping norms, then look no further; our top three have also made the list for choice of four-star and above campsites, with France coming in top of the list.
According to camping.info, the land of romance boasts 1,792 four-star campsites, with the most affordable stay being £7.21 per night. Second contender Germany has 1,065 four-star campsites of which the cheapest comes in at £8.85 per night. The last of the trilogy, Netherlands comes in next with 583 campsites in which the most affordable per night is £8.86.
With camping comes being in the great outdoors, and known for its variety of options when it comes to outdoor activities, Europe has an average of about 318 outdoor activities per country, so boredom is not an option, no matter which destination you choose.
Italy is home to 1,717 activities, with tours of iconic monuments such as the Colosseum, kayaking in Naples and heli-skiing in Piedmont’s snow-white mountains. This is followed by Spain’s 1,340 activities, and lastly Portugal at 1,223.
What’s more synonymous with romance than taking walks and being out together in nature, right? Well, even during your honeymoon you can still walk hand-in-hand while experiencing some of the best views these countries have to offer. With an average trail rating of four out of five stars, Germany understandably leads the pack with its 36,773 trails, while France and the United Kingdom – also with average ratings of four stars – come in with 33,358 and 27,299 respectively.
Forty three countries within Europe were analysed for this study, of which the average protected land amounts to 26%. As imagined, all top three contenders in this category came in above average. Namely, Luxembourg (51.34%), Liechtenstein (42.63%) and Bulgaria (41.04%).
With all the natural land and views that Europe has to offer, catching a glimpse of beautiful night skies and its activities should also be a bucket list honeymoon item. If it’s the northern lights you’d like to experience then head to Iceland, Norway or Belarus. Due to the minimal levels of light pollution, you’re most likely to get the best views of all the astronomical activity.
As the weather is warmer in these locations, they make popular destinations for weddings. And we all know the best way to enjoy each other's company as newlyweds and de-stress after all the wedding festivities is by booking a love-filled honeymoon. We hope our study will help guide your choice, whether you’re a thrill-seeking duo or simply outdoor-sy adventurers.
